Wolverines Rally Past Huskies, 4-1
9/5/1999 12:00:00 AM | Field Hockey
The Wolverines (3-1) controlled the play from start to finish in their home opener, outshooting the Huskies 22-6 in the game, including a 10-1 advantage in the second half. Still, Northeastern (0-2) scored the game's opening goal 5:03 into the game when Jenn Foley found Sarah Broderick all alone to the right of the Michigan net.
The Wolverines would rally and tie the game at 21:26 of the first half. With Michigan applying pressure inside the circle, Rose fed a pass from the right wing to Reid just to the goalie's left. Reid banged the ball into the net for her third goal of the season, equaling her career high set in 1997. Michigan grabbed the lead 5:12 later when Kelli Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) converted a penalty corner for a 2-1 Wolverine advantage.
Michigan played even stronger defense in the second half, limiting Northeastern to just one shot attempt. The Wolverines scored their two second half goals on counter-attack break-aways. At 14:08 Jocelyn LaFace (Rossland, B.C./Rossland Secondary) played a long through-ball to spring Veith on a break-away down the right side. Veith banged the shot off the goalie's pads and into the net for a 3-1 Michigan lead.
The final Wolverine score came on a similar play as Gannon made a long pass again to Veith for a break-away down the right side. Veith drew the goalie's attention and then slid a pass to Rose flying down the left side. Rose redirected the pass into the net at 10:57 to close the game's scoring.
The Wolverines return to action next weekend when they travel to Charlottesville, Va., for a pair of games. On Friday (Sept. 10) they face the University of Virginia at 4 p.m. and on Sunday (Sept. 12) they face James Madison at 11 a.m.
