Virginia Comes Back to Sink Wolverines
9/10/1999 12:00:00 AM | Field Hockey
Virginia opened the scoring less than three minutes into the game, but Michigan answered eight minutes later to knot the score at one. The game stayed tied at one until Reid gave the Wolverines the lead with 22 minutes left in the contest. The Maize and Blue held the 2-1 advantage until the final minutes of the game. Virginia's Lorraine Vizzuso scored the tying goal with just 2:32 left in regulation.
Once again, Kelli Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) and Courtney Reid (South Deerfield, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon HS) scored a goal apiece to lead the offensive attack for Michigan, which outshot Virginia 13-6 on the afternoon. Each leads U-M with four goals on the season. Additionally, each assisted on the other's goal. The three points on the day gives Reid 13 points on the season, surpassing her career totals through her first two years.
"We played a decent game against a great team," said head coach Marcia Pankratz. "Unfortunately, we weren't able to come up with the victory."
Michigan will face another national power on Sunday (Sept. 12) when it meets James Madison at 11 a.m. in Charlottesville, Va.
