James Madison Stops U-M with Strong First Half
9/12/1999 12:00:00 AM | Field Hockey
The loss drops Michigan's record to 3-3 on the season, with all three losses coming against teams that finished last season ranked in the top 10 -- at North Carolina (Aug. 28), at Virginia (Sept. 10). This was the third meeting between U-M and JMU and first since 1990, with Michigan holding a 2-0 series advantage coming into this year's contest.
JMU seized momentum 11:02 into the contest when Theresa Dinallo fired a shot past U-M's Kati Oakes (Lititz, Pa./Warwick HS) to give the Dukes the early lead. JMU's Katrina Hunter scored the Dukes final two goals off of penalty-corner plays to seal the win.
The only offensive chances the Wolverines were able to muster came off the sticks of Kelli Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS), Jessie Veith (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest HS), and Stephanie Johnson (Houston, Texas/The Kinkaid School) as U-M was held to its lowest shot total since 1996.
Michigan will return to action next Sunday (Sept. 19, 1 p.m.) when it travels to Syracuse to face yet another tough early-season foe.
