Wolverine Watkins Qualifies for U.S. Women's Amateur

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan women's golfer Trish Watkins (Darien, Conn./Darien HS) will compete in the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship, beginning Aug. 9 at Biltmore Forest Country Club in Asheville, N.C.
Watkins, who will be a junior at Michigan in 1999-2000, qualified for the tournament July 21 at Somerset Hills Country Club in Bernardsville, N.J. She carded a single-round total of 75, giving her a top-three finish.
This will be the first time Watkins has competed in the Amateur Championship, which begins Aug. 9 and runs through Aug. 14. The competition will begin with two rounds of stroke play involving approximately 145 individuals. The top 64 placers will advance to single-elimination match play competition, which will last for six rounds with the field being reduced by half each round.
The 1998 U.S. Women's Amateur Championship was held at Ann Arbor's Barton Hills Country Club, with Arizona State's Grace Park winning the title.
