Lake State Superior in 6-3 Win Over Wolverines
2/5/1999 12:00:00 AM | Ice Hockey
The game started with the Lakers taking a 2-1 lead into the first intermission on Tobin Praznik's goal at 8:09 and Jeff Cheeseman's tally 10 seconds before the break. The Wolverine goal came on the power play at the 12:06 mark of the period. Mike Van Ryn (London, Ont.) blasted a low shot from the blueline through a screen for his eighth goal of the season.
In the second period, Michigan came out firing and tied the game at 2-2 on Jeff Jillson's (North Smithfield, R.I.) goal 5:29 into the period. Jillson had trouble handling the puck at the blue line, before corralling it and skating down the right side boards. At the bottom of the face-off circle, Jillson cut in front of the net, shielding the puck from the defense, and flipped it over the Laker goalie for his third goal of the season.
Following the Michigan goal, the Lakers responded with four unanswered goals in the second period. Mike Henderson, Praznik, Fred Slukynsky and Trent Walford each scored for Lake Superior as the Lakers took control of the game, leading 6-2 after 40 minutes of play.
Michigan had a strong third period, scoring the game's final goal and generating numerous scoring opportunities. However, Josh Langfeld (Coon Rapids, Minn.) was the only one able to score in the period, at 9:18. With the Wolverines on the power play, defensemen Sean Peach (Langley, B.C.) created the play. From the blue line, Peach threaded a pass to Langfeld all alone in the face-off circle to the left of the LSSU goaltender. Langfeld buried the shot for his 12th goal of the season.
Michigan returns to action tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 6) as the Wolverines host Ohio State at 7 p.m. in Yost Ice Arena.

QUOTES
MICHIGAN HEAD COACH RED BERENSON
"We played poor defense. Josh Blackburn was not a factor (in the loss)."
"We got out checked and outplayed. The forwards didn't help the defense out."
MICHIGAN ASSISTANT CAPTAIN DALE ROMINSKI
"We had a lot of defensive lapses tonight. We missed passes, created a lot of turnovers and we could not get out of our zone."
