Late Goal Helps Michigan Tie Broncos on the Road

Michigan (17-8-5, 14-6-4 CCHA) came from behind after falling down 2-0 through the first half of the game. The Wolverines finished the first period down 1-0 after struggling offensively, generating just four shots to Western's seven. Western Michigan's goal came 7:51 into the period when Chuck Mindel scored his 11th of the season after the puck slid though Josh Blackburn's (Choctaw, Okla.) legs.
Michigan returned from the locker room fired up, taking five shots in the first several minutes of the second period. However, Michigan allowed a Bronco goal by Daryl Andrews at 6:31 to fall behind 2-0, and the Wolverines found themselves killing a 5-on-3 situation after Bobby Hayes (Westland, Mich.) and Jay Vancik (West Bloomfield, Mich.) each picked up penalties. The Wolverines killed the situation and nearly netted a 5-on-4 short-handed goal when Dale Rominski (Farmington Hills, Mich.) broke loose and fired a shot which slid past the Broncos' goaltender Matt Barnes and hit the outside edge of the post.
Despite the miss, Michigan battled back and finally found the net when Josh Langfeld (Coon Rapids, Minn.) took a pass from Sean Peach (Langley, B.C.) and skated down the ice through the neutral zone and netted his shot at the 15:31 mark of the second, cutting the lead in half going into the locker room.
Both teams entertained scoring chances in the final period, but Blackburn and Barnes kept the score close until Michigan pulled Blackburn for an extra skater with less than 20 seconds remaining. Following a pair of faceoffs in the offensive zone, the puck ended up in front of the net where Kosick poked it in after Langfeld and Mike Comrie (Edmonton, Alberta) took shots at Barnes.
For the game, Blackburn made 23 saves, while Barnes stopped 29 shots.
Michigan returns to Lawson Ice Arena to finish the three-game series with the Broncos (5-17-7, 4-14-7 CCHA) next Friday (Feb. 19) at 7 p.m. before playing league-leading Michigan State at Joe Louis Arena on Saturday (Feb. 20) at 7:30 p.m.
