Wolverines Fall to Spartans, Finish Second at GLI
12/30/1999 12:00:00 AM | Ice Hockey
Despite the loss to the Spartans, Michigan placed two players -- forward Mark Kosick (Victoria, B.C.) and defenseman Dave Huntzicker (Ann Arbor, Mich.) -- on the 1999 GLI all-tournament team.
In a special-teams affair, it was the third of four power-play goals of the game that gave Michigan State its third consecutive GLI championship. The Spartans' Kris Koski netted a behind-the-net pass from Shawn Horcoff less than five minutes into the final period of play to give the Spartans the game-winner.
Following the goal, Michigan's John Shouneyia (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) fired a shot at MSU's Joe Blackburn that hit Blackburn's shoulder and then the crossbar in a flurry of action. Scott Matzka (Port Huron, Mich.) picked up the rebound and hit Blackburn in the shoulder on a follow-up shot, but was unable to find the net.
The Spartans added an insurance goal with 9:03 remaining when Brian Maloney buried another behind-the-net pass while on a power play to give Michigan State a 3-1 lead.
Michigan State (16-5-0) took the first lead of the game with 6:33 to play in a first period that featured end-to-end play and plenty of hitting. With Shouneyia in the penalty box, the Spartans' Rustyn Dolyny was on the left side of the crease and one-timed a pass from Mike Weaver past L.J. Scarpace (Dearborn, Mich.).
The Wolverines (15-6-0) returned the favor when Mike Cammalleri (Richmond Hill, Ontario) netted his ninth goal of the season just over five minutes into the second period. Shouneyia, at the top of the right face-off circle, passed the puck to Mark Mink (Livonia, Mich.) at the right side of the crease. Mink immediately fed it across the crease to Cammalleri for the power-play goal that tied the game at 1-1 after two periods.
The game was played in front of 18,211 fans at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. Among the fans at the game was Kyle Reininger of Mt. Clemens, Mich., the one millionth fan in the 35-year history of the GLI.
The Wolverines and the Spartans return to Central Collegiate Hockey Association action against each other on Friday (Jan. 7) in East Lansing with a 7:05 p.m. game at Munn Ice Arena.
