Beitel Leads Michigan into Big Ten Semifinals

The Wolverines applied pressure throughout the overtime session. Three and a half minutes into the extra period, Beitel took a blast from 18 yards out which hit the crossbar but bounced off the back of the Michigan State goaltender and carried into the net for the golden goal. The tally was Beitel's team-leading 11th of the season and her fifth game-winner on the year.
The Wolverines had a golden opportunity to close the game out in regulation. Following a flurry by Michigan State, Beitel led a break-out and slid a pass to Amber Berendowsky (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) for a breakaway. Berendowsky's blast from 15 yards out was tipped wide by the Michigan State goalie.
Michigan grabbed a 1-0 lead on Beitel's first goal of the game, a tally midway through the first half. Berendowsky won back a ball in the offensive zone, dribbled in and took a 15-yard shot from the right wing which was deflected just wide of the far post. The Wolverines scored off the ensuing corner kick. Emily Schmitt (Troy, Mich./Athens HS) sent the ball into the box, where Beitel headed it off the crossbar and in for her 10th tally of the season.
Moments into the second half the Wolverines had an opportunity to open the game further. Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) broke in on the MSU net from midfield but was brought down from behind just outside the box, drawing a red card and forcing the Spartans to play a player down the rest of the game. Schmitt's free kick from 20 yards out was punched over the crossbar.
Michigan State (6-12-3) tied the game with 9:34 remaining in the game. The Spartans played a long ball into the box. Goalie Carissa Stewart (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat HS) charged out of the net but was beaten to the ball. After possession of the ball bounced around, Kate Knorring's touch from five yards out bounded inside the far post for the equalizer.
The Wolverines squandered many quality chances in the first half of the game. Michigan State's goalie needed to dive to catch a 12-yard shot from Schmitt 14:00 into the game. Carly Williamson (Barrington, R.I./Barrington HS) forced the Spartan goalie to extend to her fullest to tip a shot wide with 11:00 left in the half and hit the post on a 10-yard blast with under 1:30 remaining in the opening period.
Michigan returns to action at 1 p.m. tomorrow (Saturday, Nov. 6) at Bill Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington, Ind., when it faces Illinois, a 2-0 victor over Iowa in the tournament's opening game. The Wolverines defeated the Illini 2-1 in overtime earlier in the season (Sept. 24) in Ann Arbor.
