ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The eighth-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team defeated Clemson, 136.5-103.5, and conference rival Ohio State, 135-102, in a three-team dual meet held at Canham Natatorium on Friday (Nov. 19). With the two victories, Michigan improves its record to 4-3 overall, 2-1 against Big Ten Conference opponents. Clemson, which defeated Ohio State 138-104, is 2-2, while Ohio State drops to 1-6, 0-3 in the Big Ten.
Clemson began the meet by taking the first two events, yet the Wolverines proved too strong, winning six of the next eight events on the way to eight first-place finishes.
Leading the Wolverines were All-Americans Shannon Shakespeare (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Kelvin SS) and Jennifer Crisman (Hudsonville, Mich./Jenison HS), who paced Michigan with two individual first-place performances apiece. Shakespeare placed first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.14) and 500-yard freestyle (4:54.54). Crisman turned in first-place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle (23.44) and 100-yard freestyle (51.55).
U-M had three other individual first-place performers. Senior Hannah Shin (Inverness, Ill./Fremd HS) placed first in the one-meter diving with a score of 258.00. Sophomore Lindsay Carlberg (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) and freshman Traci Valasco (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) turned in first-place performances in the 200-yard backstroke and 200-yard breaststroke, respectively.
The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Crisman, freshman Laura Kazniecki (Wolverine Lake, Mich./Western HS), Melissa Sugar (Newburgh, Ind./Evansville Day School) and Shakespeare turned in the Wolverines' final victory of the night, finishing in a time of 3:27.88.
The next meet for the Wolverines is the Michigan Invitational Dec. 3-5 at Canham Natatorium (10 a.m./6 p.m.).
