Michigan Stuns Iowa in Field Hockey Thriller
10/8/1999 12:00:00 AM | Field Hockey
The only goal of the game came with 26:29 remaining in the first half as Michigan senior captain Ashley Reichenbach (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra HS) notched the third goal of her career and third of the season on a penalty stroke. The stroke was called after Michigan (9-4, 3-1) ran a set penalty corner play and an Iowa defender stopped the would-be goal with her foot, thus awarding U-M a penalty stroke. The ball must be stopped with the stick.
"Ashley is our (penalty) stroker and she came through in a pressure situation," said Michigan head coach Marcia Pankratz. "This was a very big win for our team, but the Big Ten season is a double-round robin, and we have to face them again. It's a long season and this is just the beginning. Our players are already talking about Sunday's game against Northwestern."
The Wolverine defense was suffocating throughout the game, holding the Hawkeyes (10-1, 3-1) to just one first-half shot and four for the game. The save of the game came with 7:25 remaining in the contest as U-M goaltender Kati Oakes (Lititz, Pa./Warwick HS) came out of the goal to make a sliding save on Iowa's Lesley Irvine, who was alone in front of the net on a breakaway. Iowa's only other chance came on a penalty corner, its only one of the game, with just under one minute remaining in the game. Irvine got the shot off, but the ball was unable to make it through the wall of Michigan defenders and the Maize and Blue was able to run out the clock to seal the win.
Michigan will return to action Sunday (Oct. 10) as it hosts Northwestern at 1 p.m.
