Cantin Named Big Ten Athlete of the Week

PARK RIGDE, Ill. -- University of Michigan senior All-American Jay Cantin (Camlachie, Ontario/St. Clair SS) was named Big Ten Conference Athlete of the Week for men's cross country, league officials announced Wednesday (Oct. 6).
Cantin earned the honor after becoming the first Big Ten athlete to break 24 minutes in the 8,000-meter run. He accomplished this feat on Oct. 1 at the adidas/Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind. Cantin placed second overall at the meet, leading the then-No. 13 Wolverines to a tie with then-No. 12 Georgetown for the invitational title. Cantin's personal best of 23:54 puts him in first place on the Big Ten season best times list.

At the Big Ten Conference Championships, Cantin has finished 24th (1996), eighth (1997) and 12th (1998). He is enrolled in the Division of Kinesiology, concentrating in physical education.
In addition to Cantin, three other Wolverines rank in the top 10 of the Big Ten season best times. Junior Mike Wisniewski (Temperance, Mich./Bedford HS) is third with a time of 24:20, senior Steve Lawrence (Consecon, Ontario/East Northumberland SS) is eighth with a time of 24:38 and Mark Pilja (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North HS) rounds out the top 10 with a time of 24:41.
