Up Next for Michigan
The Michigan cross country teams will travel to State College, Pa., Saturday (Oct. 30) for the Big Ten Conference Championship. The women's 5,000-meter race will start the event at 10:45 a.m. on the Penn State White Golf Course, followed by the men's 8,000-meter race at 11:30 a.m.
This year's women's championship features three ranked teams: No. 5 Wisconsin, No. 17 Minnesota and No. 18 Michigan State.
Women Ready For Big Ten Championship
The University of Michigan women's cross country team has faced some ups and downs this season. After winning the Spiked Shoe Invitational (Sept. 18) the women appeared to be back on track, but with some team injuries the Wolverines have been unable to rise up to their national status of last year. The women have remained competitive in the Big Ten Conference though, defeating every Big opponent they have faced -- Michigan State, Penn State, Indiana and Purdue -- except Northwestern, which defeated Michigan by five points at the Sam Bell Invitational (Sept. 25).
This Saturday could be the Wolverines' moment to shine and prove themselves in the Big Ten with the leadership of senior Elizabeth Kampfe (Decatur, Ill./MacArthur HS) and the current success of junior Lisa Ouellet (Sudbury, Ontario/Lasalle SS).
"We've ran out at Penn State this year," said head coach Mike McGuire. "With similar types of competitive performances out of everyone, we can get us into the top two."
Michigan Notables
-- Lisa Ouellet is still finishing on top. For the fifth consecutive race, Ouellet was the Wolverines' top finisher, placing eighth at the Wolverine Interregional.
