Rowing Finishes Among Leaders at Head of the Charles

BOSTON -- The University of Michigan's women's rowing team traveled to Boston for the Head of the Charles on Sunday (Oct. 24). The varsity eight boat placed sixth in the women's Championship Eight race with a time of 17:16.83, while the varsity four finished with a top-three time of 19:24.53 but fell to 14th after receiving a one-minute penalty for colliding with the University of Massachusetts boat during the race.
Among collegiate teams, the Wolverines fared well with the varsity eight finishing third and the varsity four finishing seventh.
In the varsity eight competition, Rowing Canada took first with a time of 16:31.41, but the fastest collegiate team was Southern Cal in fourth with a time of 7:06.56. The Virginia Cavaliers edged out the Wolverines for the second fastest collegiate time, finishing in 17:16.23, less than a second faster than Michigan. The Wolverines finished ahead of the defending national champions, Brown University, in the varsity eight race by over a second.
In the varsity four race, Rowing Canada also took top honors, finishing in 18:29.94. The University of California was the top collegiate team and finished second overall with a time of 18:30.87. Michigan ended with an actual time of 19:24.53, but the one-minute penalty gave them an official time of 20:24.53 for a 14th-place finish.
The Wolverines finish the fall season with the Head of the Elk in Elkhart, Ind., on Sunday (Oct. 31).
