ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- With the scorecards coming in from Sunday's (Oct. 10) shotgun start, Mid-American Conference rivals Ohio and Kent waited eagerly to see who would win the team title of the University of Michigan's Wolverine Women's Golf Invitational.
When all the scores were added, the two MAC schools were tied at 640 over the two rounds played at the U-M Golf Course, and Ohio seized the invitational title by winning the one-hole playoff over Kent, the first-round leader. The Bobcats finished with consistent rounds of 320 and 320, while the Kent Golden Flashes shot rounds of 316-324. Southwest Missouri State rounded out the top three with a total of 647 (326-321).
Kent's Jan Dowling won the individual title after firing rounds of 74 and 80 for an eight-over-par 154 finish. Illinois' Lauren Kandra and Ohio's Heather Fueger tied for runner-up honors at nine-over 155, with Kandra shooting 77-78 and Fueger finishing with rounds of 73 and 82. Southwest Missouri State's Jessica Polus rounded out the top four with an 11-over 157 finish after rounds of 78 and 79.
Michigan's top unit, the Blue team, finished fourth with a total of 650 after rounds of 327 and 323, while the Maize team finished tied for ninth with a total of 676 after rounds of 347-329.
The Blue team was paced behind the play of sophomore Bess Bowers (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington North HS) and sophomore LeAnna Wicks (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS). Bowers finished tied for 10th after rounds of 82 and 79 for a 161 total, while Wicks tied for 13th with rounds of 82 and 80 for a 162 total. Freshman Kim Benedict (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) finished tied for 16th after rounds of 80 and 83 for a 163 total.
Rounding out the Blue team scores were: sophomore Cortney Reno (Grosse Ile, Mich./Grosse Ile HS), who finished tied for 23rd (84-81/165); junior Amy Talbot (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas HS), who finished tied for 26th (83-84/167); and freshman Sarah Rector, (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids HS), who tied for 44th (85-86/171).
For the Maize team, sophomore Stephanie MacAdams (Lubbock, Texas/Coronado HS) led the charge, finishing tied for 16th after solid rounds of 83 and 80 for a 163 total. Sophomore Misia Lemanski (Grosse Ile, Mich./Grosse Ile HS) tied for 31st after rounds of 88 and 80 for a 168 total.
Rounding out the Maize team scores were: junior Jennifer Baumann (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS), who tied for 46th (89-83/172); junior Trish Watkins (Darien, Conn./Darien HS), who tied for 50th (87-86/173); and sophomore Stephanie Bezilla (Grandville, Mich./Grandville HS), who finished 78th (94-91/185).
The Wolverines return to action immediately as they travel to Franklin, Ind., to participate in the Women's Collegiate Shootout at the Legends of Indiana Golf Course on Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 11-12).
