Michigan Finishes Second at Virginia Duals

HAMPTON, Va. -- The 11th-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team finished in second place at the Virginia Duals, going 3-1 in the tournament. Michigan 133-pounder Joe Warren (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Kentwood HS) was named the event's Outstanding Wrestler.
On Saturday (Jan. 9), the Wolverines defeated 14th-ranked Oregon State 23-18 in the semifinals to advance to the championship against fellow Big Ten Conference member Illinois. The eighth-ranked Illini handed Michigan its first dual meet loss of the season as Illinois, the event's top seed, got a pin in the last match to win by a count of 22-17.
The Maize and Blue took six of 10 matches against Oregon State with several impressive performances in the process. Warren scored a major decision over OSU's Ben Richards by a count of 13-3, while Damion Logan (Garfield, N.J./St. Joseph's Regional HS) took just 1:03 to pin OSU's Paul Barron. Otto Olson (Everett, Wash./Everett HS) recorded his third technical fall of the tournament with a 22-6 drubbing of the Beavers' Clint Wilson.
In the title match against Illinois, the Maize and Blue got off to a fast start, winning the first three matches, but the Illini regained the momentum and clinched the meet in the final match. Chris Viola (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch HS) decisioned Steve Doerrer by a 10-8 count to get the Wolverines off to an early 3-0 lead. Warren continued his outstanding tournament by recording a technical fall over Carl Stolz, while Logan decisioned David Perry, 4-3. The Illini won five of the final seven matches, including two pins and one major decision. The meet will not count towards the Big Ten standings, and the two schools will meet again Sunday, Jan. 31, at 1 p.m. in Cliff Keen Arena.
Five Wolverines went undefeated, led by Warren, whose perfect 4-0 record included two major decisions and a technical fall. Viola, Logan, Olson and Frank Lodeserto (North Haledon, N.J./St. Joseph's Regional HS) also posted perfect records.
