Field Hockey Falls to Iowa in Regular-Season Finale
11/1/1998 12:00:00 AM | Field Hockey
Iowa led 1-0 at the half behind a goal from Quan Nim. The Wolverines came out in the second half and peppered Iowa goalie Lisa Cellucci with 13 shots, but none found the back of the goal as Cellucci made several outstanding saves to preserve the shutout. Loveita Wilkinson (New Castle, Del./William Penn HS) and Kelli Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) paced the Wolverine attack with five shots each.
"We didn't play well today," said head coach Marcia Pankratz. "Iowa's goalie made some great saves and we just couldn't score. We've struggled at times throughout the year to score goals and that was the case again today. We need a pure goal scorer and we don't have that right now."
Michigan finished the Big Ten regular season with a 7-3 league record, good for second place behind 8-2 Penn State. The Wolverines will be the second seed in the Big Ten Conference Tournament, to be held Friday through Sunday, Nov. 6-8, in East Lansing, Mich. U-M will have a first-round bye and face the winner of Ohio State and Northwestern in the semifinals.
