- Title:
- Co-Offensive Coordinator, Tight Ends
Steve Casula is in his second season as Michigan's tight ends coach in 2025, and added the title of co-offensive coordinator prior to this season. Casula was an offensive analyst with the Wolverines from 2019-21 before spending the 2022-23 seasons as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Massachusetts (UMass).
In his first season as an assistant coach in 2024, the tight end room totaled 79 receptions for 792 yards and six touchdowns, led by second team All-American and Mackey Award finalist Colston Loveland. Loveland set a single-season U-M record for catches by a tight end (56) and was top-six in single-season yards (582) and touchdowns (five) at the position. Burlsworth Trophy candidate Max Bredeson was the lynchpin of the run game and made three catches; Marlin Klein (13) and Hogan Hansen (seven) accounted for another 20.
At UMass, Casula coached seven Minutemen to All-Independent honors including three first-team performers. In 2023, the offense had its best season since 2018 and improved 40-plus spots in the national rankings across nine different categories. Casula oversaw the production of All-Independent Wide Receiver of the Year Anthony Simpson and running back Kay'Ron Adams, who was top-30 in the FBS in both yards (1,157) and touchdowns (12) on 236 carries with 20 receptions for 118 yards.
Casula joined the Wolverines’ staff as an offensive analyst in 2019 and was elevated to the role of senior analyst for the 2020 and 2021 seasons. His tenure culminated in Michigan winning the 2021 Big Ten Championship and earning its first-ever appearance in the College Football Playoff thanks in part to an offense that ranked top-25 in total offense, rushing, red zone, and scoring with 35.8 points per game.
Quite familiar with the state of Michigan football, Casula coached at Ferris State (2017-18), Davenport College (2014-16) and Western Michigan (2010-11) before his time in Ann Arbor. He was the Bulldogs' offensive coordinator in both of his two seasons in Big Rapids and coached the tight ends and running backs in 2018. Ferris State qualified for the Division II Playoff in both seasons with Casula on staff (2017-18), finishing with an 11-2 record in 2017 and a 15-1 mark in 2018 as national runners-up. He coached quarterback Jayru Campbell to the 2018 Harlon Hill Trophy as the Division II College Football Player of the Year.
Casula was offensive coordinator for three seasons at Davenport University and assumed interim head coaching duties at the end of his tenure. The Panther program started from scratch under former Ferris State defensive coordinator Lou Esposito, and Casula was the team's first hire. He helped the school's startup team end with a 6-5 record in its initial campaign. He helped create the foundation for the program and was an active recruiter in the Midwest region. Following the departure of Esposito in late 2016, Casula was appointed interim head coach and filled the role until late February when he accepted the position at Ferris State. He helped the incoming GLIAC member ink its 2017 recruiting class and served as the liaison with compliance, financial aid, housing, and admissions.
Before his time at Davenport, Casula was the tight ends and h-backs coach at Colgate (2013). He also was active in coaching five of the team’s six special teams units and helped fullback Ed Pavalko earn all-league honors. His group established program records for receptions and yards at the tight end position.
Casula began coaching in the state of Michigan at Western Michigan. He spent two seasons as a graduate assistant working with the offensive line in 2010-11 before earning his first full-time assistant coach appointment mentoring the tight ends and fullbacks in 2012. Casula was the squad's academic and walk-on coordinator and led community service initiatives in addition to being responsible for quality control, playbook maintenance, opponent breakdowns, and more. In addition, he earned his master’s degree in coaching sports performance while coaching with the Broncos.
Casula received his bachelor’s degree in management from the University of Delaware in 2009. He spent two seasons as a student assistant coach working with the offensive line (2008-09). While attending college at Delaware, he was an assistant coach at a pair of prep schools, working at Kennett (Pennsylvania) High School in 2007 and Delcastle (Delaware) in 2006. As a prep player in Delaware, Casula earned all-state honors as a senior and was team captain at Salesianum High School.
Casula and his wife, Stephanie, have three children: Audrey, Paulie and Tommy.
