- Title:
- Assistant Coach / General Manager
A veteran coach with more than 15 years of collegiate experience, Church serves as Michigan's assistant coach and general manager, overseeing roster management, player personnel, recruiting strategy and program operations while assisting with on-court coaching responsibilities. One of May's longest-tenured and most trusted staff members, Church has played a key role in building championship-caliber programs throughout his career.
Over the last 13 seasons working alongside May and Mike White, Church has been part of staffs that have combined for more than 300 victories, reached an NCAA Final Four, an Elite Eight and captured the 2026 NCAA National Championship.
Since arriving in Ann Arbor in 2024, Church has helped Michigan reestablish itself among the nation's elite programs. Through his first two seasons, the Wolverines have compiled a 64-13 record, won the 2025 Big Ten Tournament championship, captured the 2026 Big Ten regular-season title, advanced to consecutive NCAA Tournaments, reached both the Sweet 16 and Final Four, and secured the program's first national championship since 1989.
In 2025-26, Church helped guide one of the greatest seasons in school history. Michigan established a program-record 37 victories, posted a 19-1 Big Ten record to claim the outright conference championship, earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and captured the national championship.
During his first season in Ann Arbor, Church helped orchestrate one of the nation's biggest turnarounds as Michigan improved from eight wins the previous season to a 27-10 record, won the Big Ten Tournament championship and advanced to the Sweet 16.
Prior to Michigan, Church spent six seasons as an assistant coach under May at Florida Atlantic, helping transform the Owls into one of the nation's premier mid-major programs. During his tenure in Boca Raton, FAU posted a 126-69 record, achieved six consecutive winning seasons for the first time in program history and earned four postseason appearances. The Owls also recorded consecutive 25-win seasons and won 60 games over Church's final two seasons.
Church played an integral role in the most successful era in Florida Atlantic basketball history. In 2022-23, the Owls posted a school-record 35 victories, won both the Conference USA regular-season and tournament championships, advanced to the program's first Final Four and finished ranked No. 5 in the USA Today Coaches Poll. Following the historic Final Four run, Church helped guide FAU through its transition into the American Athletic Conference. The Owls finished 25-9, placed second in the AAC standings and earned a second straight NCAA Tournament berth.
Before joining May's staff at Florida Atlantic, Church spent three seasons as Director of Basketball Operations at Florida under head coach Mike White. During his tenure in Gainesville, the Gators posted a 69-37 record, recorded three consecutive 20-win seasons and earned NCAA Tournament appearances in both 2017 and 2018. Florida advanced to the 2017 Elite Eight after finishing second in the SEC and posting a 27-9 record.
Following the 2016-17 season, Church was recognized as one of the nation's top young coaches, earning a spot on the National Association of Basketball Coaches' prestigious 30-Under-30 Team. Church also served as Director of Basketball Operations at Louisiana Tech under White from 2013-15. The Bulldogs compiled a 56-17 record, won consecutive conference regular-season championships and reached the NIT quarterfinals in both seasons.
Prior to Louisiana Tech, Church spent a season as an assistant coach at nationally ranked Chipola College after serving as a graduate assistant at both Ole Miss and Louisiana Tech.
A walk-on guard at Charlotte, Church earned Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll recognition throughout his collegiate career. After graduating with a bachelor's degree from Charlotte, he earned a master's degree in kinesiology, specializing in sports performance and exercise science from Louisiana Tech.
Church and his wife, Alex, reside in Ann Arbor.
