- Title:
- Assistant Coach
NOTE: Following Michigan's 2025-26 national championship season, Joyner was named head coach at Oregon State, becoming the program's 23rd head coach.
Justin Joyner joined the University of Michigan basketball program as an assistant coach in 2024 after a successful seven-year stint under longtime Saint Mary's head coach Randy Bennett.
In his second and final season with the Wolverines, Joyner helped Michigan author one of the greatest campaigns in program history. The Wolverines posted a school-record 37-3 record, captured the outright Big Ten Championship with a conference-record 19-1 mark and won the NCAA National Championship, the program's first since 1989.
Michigan earned the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament Midwest Regional and advanced to the Final Four after victories over Alabama, Tennessee and Arizona. The Wolverines capped their championship run with a victory over Connecticut in the national title game.
Over his two seasons in Ann Arbor, Joyner helped guide Michigan to a 64-13 record, a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances, a Big Ten regular-season championship, a Big Ten Tournament title, a Final Four appearance and the 2026 NCAA National Championship.
In his first season with the Maize and Blue, Joyner helped Michigan more than triple its win total from the previous season, posting a 27-10 record. After finishing tied for second in the Big Ten with a 14-6 mark, the Wolverines earned the No. 3 seed in the Big Ten Tournament.
Michigan defeated Purdue in the quarterfinals and Maryland in both the semifinals and championship game to claim the 2025 Big Ten Tournament title. The Wolverines earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the Sweet 16 after victories over UC San Diego and Texas A&M before falling to Auburn.
After completing his studies at UC Santa Barbara, Joyner began working as an individual skill development coach and coaching on the AAU circuit before transitioning to the collegiate ranks in 2017 as Saint Mary's Director of Basketball Operations.
Following one season, he was promoted to assistant coach and later elevated to associate head coach in 2022. During his seven seasons with the Gaels, Saint Mary's compiled a 171-60 record and won two West Coast Conference regular-season championships (2023, 2024) and two WCC Tournament titles (2019, 2024).
Joyner helped Saint Mary's make four NCAA Tournament appearances (2019, 2022, 2023, 2024) and two NIT appearances (2018, 2021). The Gaels posted six 20-win seasons during his tenure, including a 30-win campaign in 2017-18.
He coached numerous All-WCC performers, including conference Players of the Year Jock Landale (2018) and Augustas Marciulionis (2024), Defensive Players of the Year Logan Johnson (2023) and Mitchell Saxen (2024), and Sixth Man of the Year Tommy Kuhse (2022).
Joyner played collegiately at UC Santa Barbara from 2006-11 under head coach Bob Williams. A three-time team captain, he appeared in 112 games and helped the Gauchos win two Big West regular-season titles and back-to-back conference tournament championships in 2010 and 2011.
He finished his career ranked among UCSB's all-time leaders in assists (357) and steals (134). Joyner led the Gauchos in assists twice and still holds the school record for assists in a Big West Tournament game with nine against Pacific in 2011.
During his prep career, Joyner attended De La Salle High School and played for legendary coach Frank Allocco. As a senior, he helped lead the Spartans to a 32-1 record, a CIF Division I state championship and a No. 3 national ranking.
Named the Bay Valley Athletic League Player of the Year, Joyner averaged 10.4 points, 5.2 rebounds and 5.6 assists while earning All-State Division I honors and multiple all-area selections.
Joyner is married to Tracy (Hamm), and the couple has a daughter, Weslee.Â
