- Title:
- Special Assistant to the Head Coach
One of May's longest-tenured staff members, Gilbert serves as the program's Special Assistant to the Head Coach and is involved in all facets of Michigan basketball, including recruiting, scouting, analytics, film breakdown, scheduling and day-to-day program operations. Throughout his collegiate career, Gilbert has earned a reputation as a trusted strategist and behind-the-scenes contributor to winning programs at every level.
Over 15 seasons in collegiate basketball, Gilbert has been part of staffs that have combined for more than 340 victories, reached three Final Fours, won multiple conference championships and captured the 2026 NCAA National Championship.
Since arriving in Ann Arbor in 2024, Gilbert has helped Michigan engineer one of the most successful stretches in program history. Through his first two seasons, the Wolverines have compiled a 64-13 record, won the 2025 Big Ten Tournament championship, captured the 2026 Big Ten regular-season title, advanced to consecutive NCAA Tournaments, reached both the Sweet 16 and Final Four, and secured the program's first national championship since 1989.
In 2025-26, Gilbert helped Michigan produce one of the greatest seasons in school history. The Wolverines established a program-record 37 victories, posted a 19-1 Big Ten record to claim the outright conference championship, earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and captured the national title.
During his first season in Ann Arbor, Gilbert helped Michigan orchestrate one of the nation's biggest turnarounds. The Wolverines improved from eight wins the previous season to a 27-10 record, captured the Big Ten Tournament championship and advanced to the Sweet 16.
Prior to Michigan, Gilbert spent six seasons on May's staff at Florida Atlantic, serving as Assistant to the Head Coach. During his tenure in Boca Raton, the Owls established themselves as one of the nation's premier mid-major programs, posting a 126-69 record, earning four postseason appearances and recording six consecutive winning seasons — a first in program history.
Gilbert played a key role in the most successful period in Florida Atlantic basketball history. During his final two seasons, the Owls won 60 games, captured the 2023 Conference USA regular-season and tournament championships, advanced to the program's first Final Four and followed with a 25-win season and NCAA Tournament appearance in their first year as a member of the American Athletic Conference.
The historic 2022-23 campaign saw Florida Atlantic finish 35-4, lead the nation in victories and become one of the country's biggest stories. The Owls earned the program's first NCAA Tournament victory, advanced to the Final Four and finished the season ranked No. 5 in the USA Today Coaches Poll.
Before joining May at Florida Atlantic, Gilbert spent four seasons as Director of Basketball Operations at Samford under head coach Scott Padgett.
During his tenure, Samford continued its rise within the Southern Conference and recorded one of the most successful stretches in program history. The Bulldogs earned their first postseason appearance in 17 years, posted the program's first 20-win season in more than a decade and secured the school's first Division I postseason victory with a win in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament.
Gilbert also helped Samford earn a landmark road victory at Nebraska in 2015, marking the program's first win over a Big Ten opponent.
Gilbert began his collegiate career at Florida, serving three seasons as a graduate assistant under Hall of Fame coach Billy Donovan. While in Gainesville, Gilbert was part of one of the most successful stretches in Gator basketball history. Florida compiled a 91-22 record, won back-to-back SEC regular-season championships and advanced to three consecutive Elite Eights.
The Gators reached the 2014 Final Four after completing the first undefeated SEC regular season in conference history. Florida finished 36-3, won the SEC Tournament championship and recorded the most victories in program history at the time.
A native of Miami, Gilbert, earned his bachelor's degree in sociology from Florida in 2012 before completing his master's degree in sport management in 2014.
