Coach Jay Harbaugh on O'Maury Samuels
"O'Maury is an exciting back because he can do everything. He's a sturdy guy who can run the ball between the tackles as well as out on the perimeter. He has the ability to be an effective contributor in the passing game as well. O'Maury is a versatile player, and what might be most exciting is his burst. He has a great ability to stop and start. If there's a hole, he is going to hit it and hit it fast, and he can really take advantage of any creases in the defense."
In the Words of the Samuels Family
"O'Maury is a great kid! He is kind, caring, honest and hardworking. He always has time for others and is a true and valued friend to those within his circle. He is outgoing and the life of the party among his friends. O'Maury has always excelled in athletics, and it has been apparent from an early age that one day he would use athletics as a vehicle to do something special with his life. Once O'Maury sets his sights on something, he is hard to detour. At an early age, that particular trait was a bit difficult to manage at times.
"O'Maury has always had a knack with children younger than himself and always takes the time to share a moment with them, whether it was teaching a child to ride a bicycle or spending time with kids after his games. One of my proudest moments as a parent occurred last year as I sat in the empty football stadium watching football practice. I noticed a gentleman walk into the stands and sit close to me. Several minutes after he sat down, he approached me and introduced himself. He had previously coached O'Maury as a freshman and had since left coaching to raise his young children. I anticipated the conversation was going to be about football. To my surprise, the topic had nothing to do with sports but with life. The gentleman went on to say that I had a great son with character, which was rarely displayed in a kid O'Maury's age. When O'Maury was a freshman, there was a female student with severe disabilities and was wheelchair bound. Each day before PE, he would observe O'Maury go over to her and sit and talk with her until he was able to make her laugh. He stated that he never approached O'Maury about it but simply enjoyed the moments from a distance.
"O'Maury has provided us with many moments of joy, happiness and pride in sports for which we are eternally grateful. I will never forget how a stranger gave me insight into the character of my son, ironically at a football field."
