In the Words of the Sims Family…
Myles is a very engaging young man with a fun-loving, outgoing personality that instantly draws people toward him. Since the day he entered the world "wailing" with no assistance from the doctor, he has been "a force to be reckoned with" in his fierce pursuit of excellence in academics, athletics, character and service. He is a dedicated, self-motivated person who has balanced these areas with his strong work ethic, determination and enthusiasm. He is certainly a go-getter, and exemplifies outstanding leadership qualities on the field, in the classroom and in the community.
Myles is an honor student with the curiosity to explore new concepts and "think outside of the box" to become a unique student-athlete with an earnest desire to reach his personal best. He tends not to follow the crowd, but leads by example showing that academics come first to attain success throughout life. That same zeal has existed in athletics since the age of 3 when he began his first sport of baseball. Little did we know that playing in the dirt around the baseball diamond during his older brother’s games would lead to championships, All-Star teams and a bold, competitive athlete across several sports.
Myles began playing football at the age of 6. He did not initially like the sport as he began as a quarterback who did not enjoy getting tackled. His first game resulted with him turning around in the opposite direction and scoring one for the other team. He switched to defense and immediately loved tackling his opponents or intercepting the football. Committed to the sport, he began training in middle school when he was nicknamed "Spider" due to his long arms, long legs and maneuverability in any direction. Myles would later become Varsity Team Captain and an Under Armour All-American. He also earned All-Region/All-State/All-USA Defense-First Team honors and 3 Regional Championships. Thus, his continued competitive edge strengthened his aspirations to succeed in both academics and athletics.
Myles’ character has been shaped by Christian values instilled since an early age. He is respectful and displays patience, perseverance and humility whenever faced with adversity. His positive attitude has enabled him to put his "best foot forward" into all that he strives for in every aspect of life. He is a true leader who desires to be first in everything he pursues and/or to lead others to victory. However, he also never hesitates to contribute his talents when following others. His infectious personality allows him to easily connect with others to develop lasting bonds with friends and teammates, always willing to lend a helping hand or mentor younger kids. He is dependable, loyal, hard-working and focused.
Myles has a tenacious and purposeful devotion to his family, friends and community. His leadership in the community demonstrates his compassion to serve others. One project involved leading a team in building bicycles for less-fortunate children---the expressions on their faces were priceless when received. When Myles accepts a challenge, he sees it through to the end. He executes his responsibilities with conviction and resolution until the goals are attained. For the past decade, Myles has led numerous service projects and has learned that it is certainly "more blessed to give than to receive."
We are extremely proud of the exceptional young man that Myles "Spider" Sims has become---not only as a great student-athlete, but most importantly, as a person who knows by his own example that with confidence and faith, you can move mountains out of your way to accomplish extraordinary things.
Go Blue!
In the Words of Myles ...
• "I got to see the whole campus, academics – all that. They have the No. 1 business school in America, and also Coach Harbaugh, he's a top coach in the entire conference. Coach Harbaugh is a players' coach and he connected well with me."
In the Words of Westlake Coach Kareem Reid ...
• "That embodies what he is as a player. He has the speed and the length, you can't throw over him and it's hard to get behind him too. He has good ball skills. He can run a go route, get a jump ball in the red zone. That's easy for him."
• "He can go either way as far as playing corner or safety. With his length he can cover a lot of ground. He's still agile enough to play corner but he could grow into a safety too."
