Wolverines Fight Off LSU Comeback, Take Down Tigers in Four Sets

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team defeated LSU 3-1 (25-20, 25-20, 23-25, 25-21) at Crisler Center on Wednesday (Sept. 2) in the Allstate Big Ten/SEC Challenge.
Cymarah Gordon led the Michigan (3-1) offense with 16 kills on 35 attacks and added four block assists, while Ella Demetrician recorded 14 kills, five digs and two blocks. Sydney Schnichels contributed nine kills, eight digs, three blocks and three service aces. Setters Morgan Burke and Camille Edwards directed the attack as Michigan hit .288 as a team. Burke tallied 27 assists, 11 digs and two aces, while Edwards finished with 16 assists and six digs. Meredith Martin anchored the defense with 12 digs and served three aces.
LSU (2-2) opened the match with a block, but the teams were evenly matched early until a 3-0 run by the Wolverines. Back-to-back kills from Gordon and an LSU attack error put U-M up 12-9, and Michigan held the lead for the rest of the set. The Tigers cut the lead to one at 17-16, but a kill from Schnichels and an ace from Burke restored the three-point advantage. U-M once again led by just one at 20-19 but took five of the final six points to win 25-20, with a Demetrician kill securing the first set.
After an LSU kill opened the second set, Michigan responded with six straight points to take a 6-1 lead, a run that included a Schnichels ace and back-to-back blocks from Gordon and Ece Senyapici. U-M built its lead to 10-4, and although LSU took the next three points, Michigan held off the Tigers for the rest of the set. The Wolverines went on a 6-1 run to reach 20 points, but the Tigers took seven of the next 11 and fought off three set points. Martin converted on Michigan's fourth opportunity with a pass over the net that found the line and secured a 25-20 second-set win.
The third set saw the teams split the first eight points before the Tigers took a 6-4 lead. Michigan cut the Tigers' lead to one twice early but could not pull even. LSU extended its advantage to 16-11, but the Wolverines hung around. Three kills from Gordon put U-M within one at 20-19, but the Tigers stopped the run and maintained the lead. Michigan fought off three set points as a solo block from Schnichels brought the score to 24-23 before an LSU kill ended the set 25-23 in favor of the Tigers.
In the final set, Michigan started strong, forcing an LSU timeout with a 7-3 lead, highlighted by a block from Jenna Hanes and Lydia Johnson and an ace from Edwards. Out of the timeout, LSU battled back and tied the set at 10. The Wolverines built another lead at 16-13 with kills from Hanes and Schnichels, but LSU tied the set at 18 before building a 21-18 advantage of its own. Michigan responded by scoring the final seven points. Schnichels started the run with a kill before serving back-to-back aces on the final two points to close out the match and secure the 25-21 victory.
Michigan next plays Cincinnati on Saturday (Sept. 5) at 1 p.m. CT at the Valpo Popcorn Classic in Valparaiso, Ind.
