BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Paced by freshman Jordan Hwang's top-10 individual finish, the University of Michigan men's golf team wrapped up its regular season Sunday (April 19), posting a 903 54-hole total and finishing 10th at Indiana's Hoosier Collegiate Invitational at Pfau Golf Course.
After a nearly two-hour weather delay during Saturday's opening 36 holes, the Wolverines opened with a 307 in rain-soaked conditions, paced by Hwang's 72 (+1). The delay limited the 15-team field to 14 holes of the second round before darkness suspended play, with Michigan sitting in 11th place.
Michigan shaved 11 strokes off its opening-round score with a second-round 296 to move into a tie for 10th place. The Wolverines held that position in the final round as Hwang added a second 72 (+1) and sophomore Dean Muratore carded a 73 (+2), helping U-M close with a 300 and finish 10th overall at 903.
Hwang led the Wolverines with a tie for sixth place at 217 (+4), earning the first top-10 finish of his career. His showing marked Michigan's best individual finish of the spring season and left him five shots behind medalist Freddie Turnell of Illinois, who finished at 212.
Behind Hwang, sophomore RJ Arone tied for 52nd at 229, while Muratore and individual competitor redshirt-junior Jason Gordon both tied for 55th at 230. Sophomore Nilay Naik tied for 64th at 232, and sophomore Johnny Solis placed 83rd at 243.
With the regular season complete, Michigan shifts its focus to the postseason, heading to North Plains, Ore., for the Big Ten Championships. The three-day, 54-hole conference tournament will be held at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club.
