STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team wrapped up its opening weekend of Big Ten action with a 4-0 win over Penn State on Sunday afternoon (March 8) at the Indoor Tennis Center. U-M won the doubles point and the first three matches off court in straight sets to account for its four points.
Michigan took the early advantage, winning the doubles point behind victories at No. 2 and No. 1. At No. 2, Reese Miller and Laura Rahnel raced out to a 4-1 lead before the match got back on serve at 4-3. U-M broke in the ensuing game to regain control, with Miller serving out the match in the next game as the duo moved to 3-0 in dual matches.
Penn State countered with a 6-3 win at No. 2, turning attention to the top court. Michigan's No. 1 pair of Jessica Bernales and Lily Jones fell in a 4-2 hole before ripping off four straight games to clinch the first point of the match with a 6-4 victory.
With four singles courts available, the top four matches went on court first. U-M won all four first sets in singles action when Emily Sartz-Lunde kept U-M perfect with a 7-3 tiebreak to take the 7-6 win.
Jones was first off court for Michigan, dropping just five games in a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 2. Jones broke early in both sets and carried the momentum to the win.
Piper Charney followed with a 6-4, 6-3 win at the top of the lineup, using a late break in the first set to take the early advantage. In the second, set broke at 3-2 and consolidated the break at love for the 4-2 advantage. She broke again in the next game but was unable to close it out on her serve. She used another timely break in the second set, holding serve at 5-4 and breaking Patricia Grigoras in the final game to wrap up her own match and the team win for the Wolverines.
