COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 2 Ohio State on Friday at the Ty Tucker Tennis Center.
U-M struck first, winning the final two doubles matches on court to take the doubles point. After Ohio State claimed a 6-2 win at No. 1, Michigan's No. 3 pair of Emily Sartz-Lunde and Piper Charney answered with a 6-4 victory to even the doubles tally.
Michigan's No. 2 duo of Reese Miller and Laura Rahnel clinched the doubles point and a 1-0 lead with a 7-5 triumph. U-M broke for a 6-5 advantage, sending Rahnel back to serve for the match. Ohio State fought off one match point, but Michigan converted on the second when Rahnel's serve forced a netted return.
Ohio State won five first sets in singles action and evened the team score with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6.
Miller forced a third set at No. 3 after dropping the opening set, while Lily Jones headed to a third at No. 2. The Wolverines continued to battle, as Jessica Bernales and Sartz-Lunde each pushed their matches to third sets at No. 5 and No. 4, respectively.
Ohio State earned a three-set win at No. 3 to take a 2-1 lead. Charney responded with a 7-3 tiebreak win in the second set at No. 1 to extend her match.
The Buckeyes followed with victories at No. 2 and No. 4 to secure the team win, with the remaining matches abandoned in the third set.
Michigan completes its road swing Sunday (March 8), traveling to Penn State for an 11 a.m. match.
