ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 1-ranked University of Michigan hockey team (26-7-1) will return to the ice during its Big Ten bye week, hosting Simon Fraser in an exhibition matchup Thursday (March 5). Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. at Yost Ice Arena, with the game streaming live on B1G+.
• Michigan enters the week following a weekend split with Minnesota, closing out the regular season. The Wolverines finished Big Ten play at 17-6-1 and sit atop the conference standings with 49 points -- two ahead of Michigan State, which faces Minnesota twice this weekend.
• U-M also reclaimed the No. 1 position in both the NPI -- the metric used to determine NCAA Tournament selection -- and the national polls with its 26-7-1 overall record.
• Simon Fraser visited Yost during the 2023 preseason, resulting in an 8-1 Michigan win. Seamus Casey led the Wolverines with a five-point outing, with one goal and four assists. Rutger McGroarty scored twice while Jackson Hallum had a three-point game. Garrett Schifsky and Kienan Draper both scored and added an assist.
• The Red Leafs Hockey club is 4-13-2 in its non-conference games, including 13 against NCAA Division I squads.
T.J. Hughes continues to pace the nation as the active career scoring leader with 169 points -- 42 more than the next closest player. Hughes has piled up 65 goals and 104 assists in his career, topping both categories among active players. He now ranks 26th on Michigan's all-time scoring list and continues to climb.
Three Wolverines are averaging better than a point per game this season, led by Hughes at 1.38 (18-29-47). He is joined by Michael Hage at 1.32 points per game (12-33-45) and Will Horcoff at 1.03 (22-23-45). As a team, Michigan leads the nation in scoring offense at 4.44 goals per game and owns the country's top scoring margin at +2.03.
• Mike Richter Award semifinalist Jack Ivankovic has a 20-7-1 record as Michigan's starting netminder. He owns a .922 save percentage and a 2.15 goals against average with three shutouts.
• Horcoff leads the nation in game-winning goals with seven. He is just one away from tying the single-season program record, currently held by five: Mike Knuble, Bill Muckalt, David Oliver, Dale Rominski and Dylan Duke.
• Michigan is 5-0-1 in overtime this season, the first perfect OT record in its 104-year history of the program. Since coach Brandon Naurato took over, Michigan has gone 18-7-10 when regulation is not enough to determine a victor.
