Swenson Lifts Michigan to Win at Penn State

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Senior Bjorn Swenson won a three-set singles match to lift the University of Michigan men's tennis team to a 4-3 win over Penn State on Sunday (March 15) at the Sarni Tennis Center.
Knotted at 3-3, the match came down to No. 2 singles between Swenson and Marcus Schoeman. No. 60 Swenson won the first set handily, 6-0, before Schoeman responded in the second. The pair went game-for-game into a tiebreaker, where Swenson led 3-2 before Schoeman rattled off five straight points to take the set, 7-6 (3).
The two again traded games in the third and were tied at 5-5 before Swenson broke Schoeman to take the lead and closed it out on serve, 7-5.
Swenson and Nicholas Steiglehner earned a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles after jumping out to an early break. Leading 3-2, the pair won three straight games to secure the decision. Mert Oral and Arnav Bhandari followed with a 6-3 victory at No. 3 doubles after taking a 3-1 advantage.
The Wolverines captured first sets at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles, while the Nittany Lions took first sets at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6.
Penn State (12-6, 0-3 Big Ten) got on the board with a win at No. 4 as David Lindsay defeated Steiglehner, 6-4, 6-1. The Nittany Lions then added wins at No. 5 and No. 6 to take a 3-1 lead.
No. 10 Max Dahlin put Michigan (6-6, 2-2 Big Ten) back within one with a 6-3, 7-6 (2) win over Michael Wright at No. 1.
Oral outlasted Reiya Hattori in a third-set tiebreak, 7-6 (3), to even the team score at 3-3 and set up Swenson's deciding match at No. 2.
Michigan continues its road swing Friday (March 20), traveling to Illinois for a 6 p.m. match.
