MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team closed out its dual-meet slate with a dominant 34-6 win at in-state foe Central Michigan on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 22) at McGuirk Arena. The Wolverines claimed eight bouts, four before and four after the intermission break, and recorded five bonus-point victories.
Michigan mixed lopsided wins with tightly contested decisions before the break to build an early lead. Graduate student Diego Sotelo and graduate student Lachlan McNeil earned bonus points at 125 and 149 pounds, respectively. Sotelo, ranked 31st in the latest InterMat poll, capitalized on a strong opening period to cruise to a 14-4 major decision against Archer Anderson in the dual's first bout. He secured three single-leg takedowns and a four-point tilt in the first, then added another tilt in the second.
McNeil, ranked 15th nationally, extended the margin at 149 with a 22-6 technical fall over Jimmy Nugent. He scored seven takedowns using a mix of singles, doubles and go-behinds to end the bout at the 6:42 mark, earning his first technical fall of the season.
Freshman Eren Sement posted a 4-0 decision over Nick Blackburn in his return to the lineup at 141 pounds for the fifth and final date of his redshirt season. Sement led 1-0 after a second-period escape and sealed the match with a late double-leg takedown in the third.
Redshirt freshmen Cameron Catrabone and Justin Gates bookended the intermission break with late-match scores in decision victories at 157 and 165 pounds, respectively. Catrabone, ranked 15th, earned an 8-5 overtime win over 23rd-ranked Mason Shrader. After surrendering a late takedown, Catrabone scrambled to an escape at the buzzer to force sudden victory, then countered a deep Shrader leg attack to secure the winning takedown.
Gates broke a 1-1 tie in his 4-1 win over Chandler Amaker with a takedown at the final buzzer. Amaker shot in on a low single leg, but Gates countered, came around the leg and finished the score with one second remaining in regulation.
The Mantanona brothers added big points in consecutive matches at 174 and 184 pounds. Redshirt sophomore Beau Mantanona, ranked 10th at 174, pinned Cody Brenner in a cradle at 5:21 for his fifth fall of the season after turning him to his back in the second period. Redshirt freshman Brock Mantanona, ranked seventh at 184, rolled to a 16-1 technical fall over Wyatt Ferguson with three takedowns and six back points, highlighted by a seven-point body lock in the second period, finishing at 5:44. Graduate student Taye Ghadiali, ranked fourth at heavyweight, capped the dual with a 17-2 technical fall against Aidan Fockler. Ghadiali scored three single-leg takedowns and two four-point tilts to end the match at 2:03 of the first period. He improved to 20-2 on the season and now has eight technical falls.
