TEMPE, Ariz. -- The University of Michigan softball team finished out the weekend with a 5-3 win in 10 innings over Southern Utah Sunday morning (Feb. 22) at Farrington Softball Stadium.

A balanced offensive attack powered Michigan, as five different Wolverines drove in runs. Junior transfer Gabby Ellis secured the victory in relief, tossing four innings and surrendering only one earned run on a single hit while facing 20 batters.

U-M and Southern Utah entered the 10th inning tied at three before a double from sophomore rightfielder Lauren Putz scored the automatic runner in Jenissa Conway to give the Wolverines a one-run advantage. A sacrifice bunt from redshirt junior catcher Lilly Vallimont advanced Putz to third before a sacrifice fly from junior leftfielder Ella Stephenson brought her to the plate as the team's fifth run.

The Wolverines struck first with two outs in the fourth. Freshman Kiley Carr, who was 2-for-4 on the day with three runs scored, singled to key the rally, advanced to second on an error, and scored when fellow freshman Sydney Hastings drove an RBI single to the right center gap.

Freshman designated player Siena Snyder drew a leadoff walk in the sixth, was replaced on base by senior pinch runner Indiana Langford, who advanced on Carr's second single of the day and scored on senior shortstop Avery Fantucci's sacrifice fly to left center.

Southern Utah tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run homer.

Neither team scored in the eighth \, then traded a run apiece in the ninth. The Wolverines plated their third run of the game with more small ball as senior second baseman Janelle Ilacqua scored Carr on a sacrifice fly.

Michigan (12-3) will return to action next weekend when it travels to Charlottesville, Va., for five games at The Party at Palmer Park. The Wolverines will start the weekend with a 10 a.m. first pitch on Friday (Feb. 27) against Villanova before facing host Virginia at 12:30 p.m.
