ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The 53rd-ranked University of Michigan women's golf team travels to Sarasota, Florida, for the Spartan Sun Coast Invitational, hosted by Michigan State, on Sunday and Monday (Feb. 15-16) at Palm Aire Country Club. The two-day, 54-hole event features a 15-team field, including 12 teams ranked among the nation's top 55, and will be played on a par 72, 6,191-yard layout.
Notes
• The No. 53 Wolverines will compete in a strong 15-team field featuring No. 23 Northwestern, No. 25 Kent State, No. 27 Oklahoma, No. 29 Kentucky, No. 36 Clemson, No. 46 Ohio State, No. 47 Princeton, No. 48 Illinois, No. 50 Michigan State, No. 52 Charleston, No. 54 Purdue, along with Florida International, Iowa and Maryland.
• The Spartan Sun Coast Invitational will have a Big Ten feel, as eight of the 15 teams hail from the conference -- Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern, Ohio State and Purdue. U-M will be paired with the Buckeyes and Fighting Illini for the first 36 holes.
• Michigan brings five starters and one individual to Sarasota, led by senior Mara Janess and freshman Reese Ng. Senior sisters Lauren Sung and Sydney Sung, along with sophomore Thomasine Bartholdson, round out the starting lineup, while freshman Jaymie Ng will compete as an individual for the second straight event.
• Last year at the Sun Coast Invitational, Michigan closed with its first sub-par team round of the season (287, -1) to finish fifth (869). Janess tied for third with a 212 (-4), posting back-to-back 70s (-2) for her first top-five finish. Lauren Sung tied for ninth at 215 (-1), marking her first top-10 finish.
• In the spring opener, Michigan finished 16th (887) at the Puerto Rico Classic, led by Janess (T-44th, 218), while Reese Ng posted a career-low 221 and Sydney Sung added a 222 in a weather-shortened, two-day event.
• In the race for the scoring title, Lauren Sung and Janess are tied at 72.86 strokes per round (1,020 total). Janess leads with five sub-par rounds, while Sung has four, along with one round of par.
• Jaymie Ng made her collegiate debut as an individual at the Puerto Rico Classic, tying for 73rd with a 223 (73-72-78). After missing the fall season due to injury, she is slated to compete again as an individual at the Spartan Sun Coast Invitational.
• Reese Ng is one of two Wolverines to start all five events, along with Sung, and is averaging 74.79 in her freshman season. She posted a career-low 70 (-2) in the second round of the Illini Women's Invitational and recorded a career-best 54-hole total of 221 (73-74-74) at the Puerto Rico Classic.
• During the winter break, Bartholdson stayed active on the international stage, competing twice in Chile. She captured the Los Leones Open title and followed it with a third-place finish at the XL Cachagua Golf Open, carrying strong momentum into the spring.
• The Wolverine Invitational provided a preview of the U-M Golf Course, which will serve as one of six NCAA regional sites in May -- the second time in four years under head coach Jan Dowling. In her 13 seasons at the helm, Dowling has guided Michigan to eight NCAA postseason appearances, including four trips to the NCAA Finals.
