Wolverines Roll Past Penn State in Happy Valley

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team led by as many as 42 points and had five players score in double figures as the Wolverines rolled past Penn State, 105-65, on Thursday evening (Jan. 8) at Rec Hall. It marked the fifth time Michigan has reached the 100-point mark this season.
Mila Holloway turned in 18 points to lead a quintet of double-figure scorers, with Te'Yala Delfosse going for 17 points and three rebounds off the bench. Brooke Quarles Daniels tallied a double-double, recording 13 points, 12 rebounds, three assists, a steal and a block in 32 minutes. Olivia Olson stuffed the stat sheet with 13 points, seven rebounds, six assists and two steals, while McKenzie Mathurin added 15 points off the bench. Michigan hit 12 triples in the contest and made 25-of-30 at the free throw line to record the 40-point win.
Michigan opened the game on a 20-2 run, scoring 17 straight points during the spurt that was capped by a Quarles Daniels layup with 2:48 left in the first quarter. U-M led by as many as 18 points in the opening frame before taking a 25-11 advantage after 10 minutes of action.
A pair of Mathurin free throws with 6:09 left in the second quarter pushed the lead back to 18, with Delfosse giving Michigan a 20-point cushion, 37-17, on a putback layup with 5:18 remaining before the half.
Michigan ended the half on an 8-0 run, taking a 58-31 lead into the locker room. U-M had three players in double figures over the first 20 minutes, led by Delfosse's 15 points off the bench. The Wolverines forced 17 Penn State turnovers in the first half, converting them into 20 points.
Penn State scored seven of the first nine points of the third quarter, but a bucket from Ashley Sofilkanich and a three-pointer from Syla Swords with 7:00 left in the period halted any rally attempt.
The Michigan lead reached 30 points for the first time, 69-38, on a Kendall Dudley bucket with just under five minutes remaining in the third quarter. U-M carried an 81-44 lead into the final period.
U-M's advantage grew to as many as 42 points in the fourth quarter, with Mathurin scoring 11 of her points in the final 10 minutes.
Michigan returns to Crisler Center on Sunday (Jan. 9) to host Wisconsin at 2 p.m. U-M will honor Diane Dietz and raise her No. 21 jersey to the rafters, with the pregame ceremony set to begin at 1:45 p.m. Doors will open at 12:45 p.m.
