ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan softball head coach Bonnie Tholl announced Monday (June 23) the addition of transfer Gabby Ellis to the Wolverine program. Ellis will be a junior in 2025-26 and have two years of eligibility remaining.
"I like that Gabby is a competitor," said Tholl, "and she has a skill set in which she's able to change speeds and work both north/south and east/west. She has proven that she's proficient at getting outs and forcing soft hits at this level, and I think she's really going to add a great dynamic to our staff and elevate our pitching. We can't wait to get her to Ann Arbor."
A native of Green Cove Springs, Fla., Ellis spent her first two collegiate seasons at Mercer, where she led the Bears last season with an 11-5 record and a 2.48 ERA over 113 innings pitched -- a significant improvement from her 5.01 ERA as a freshman (2024).
She helped the Bears claim the 2025 SoCon Tournament title and earn the program's first-ever bid to the NCAA Tournament, where they advanced to the Gainesville Regional championship with back-to-back wins in the elimination bracket. Ellis stranded 11 FAU base runners en route to a complete-game shutout in the latter.
Ellis played her prep ball at Clay High School, where she was a 2023 Extra Elite 100 pitcher and three-time Florida Athletic Coaches Association All-State honoree (2021, '22, '23), as well as a three-time all-county and All-First Coast selection. She totaled 37 wins over three years -- after her freshman season was wiped out by Covid -- and compiled a 1.16 career ERA, 497 strikeouts and a .171 opposing batting average. In 2022, she helped guide Clay HS to a regional title and appearance in the high school softball state semifinals.
