
Young Captures ITA Midwest Senior Player of the Year

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Gavin Young of the University of Michigan men's tennis team was named the ITA Senior Player of the Year in the Midwest Region, it was announced by the organization Tuesday (June 10).
Young had an impressive career at Michigan culminating as the NCAA national runner-up in doubles this fall. A two-time All-American, Young qualified for four NCAA Doubles Championships and two NCAA Singles Championships. The ITA Midwest Freshman of the Year and the Big Ten Freshman of the Year earned All-Big Ten honors all four years. Â
Young finishes his career with 81 doubles wins, the ninth all-time in program history. He went 22-10 against ranked doubles pairs including a 6-1 record this season. Wins over ranked opponents this season include: Ratu/Blaydes (Georgia), Sheldon/Forbes (MSU), Diminko/Nad (Notre Dame), Klassen/Tarvet (San Diego), Butte/Rihane (Florida State) and Dahlberg/Dietrich (Virginia).
He and partner Benjamin Kittay earned a trip to the national championship in doubles and reached No. 5 in the ITA rankings. That was his second time reaching No. 5 in the nation, as he did so with partner Andrew Fenty in the final 2023 rankings -- the highest ranking in school history for a doubles team. Another incredible feat was going 21-5 against Big Ten doubles teams in his career.Â
In singles, Young finished his career with a 79-41 record, going 43-23 in dual play with an 18-7 record in the Big Ten. He had a career-best eight-match win streak in the spring of 2024, and won 24 matches against ranked opponents 00 including six this year: Yves Bailly (Texas), Hoole (South Carolina), Shepp (Nebraska), Becroft (Oklahoma State), Krivokapic (Purdue) and Miyoshi (Illinois).Â
