
Wolverines to Welcome Texas in Super Regional

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team (25-4) will host a super regional for the third straight season, welcoming No. 14 Texas (18-10) to the Varsity Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon (May 10) at 1 p.m. The winner will advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament with the remainder of the tournament shifting to Baylor.
Admission is free to all matches at the VTC. Matches shall be played outdoors unless the projected weather forecast, for a minimum of two hours out of a four-hour time period from the start of the match, according to www.weather.com is: a high of less than 50 degrees or sustained winds (not including wind gusts) of more than 20 mph.
Notes
• The No. 3-ranked Wolverines (25-4) have advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season and will host No. 14-ranked Texas (18-10) after the Longhorns defeated Grand Canyon and Boise State in the Austin Regional. U-M has advanced out of the second round of the NCAA Tournament in each of the 11 times it has hosted the event.
• U-M is hosting the third round of the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season after earning the No. 3 seed for the second consecutive year. Michigan knocked off Virginia (4-2) in 2023 and Miami (4-0) in 2024 in each of its previous times hosting the super regional.
• Michigan is looking for its fourth quarterfinal appearance in program history, making the round of eight in 2016, 2023 and 2024. Â
• The Wolverines are up to 25 wins this season, the third-most in program history. U-M set the record last season with 29 wins, going 29-4. Michigan won 26 matches in 2015 before falling to Georgia in the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
• The Maize and Blue is 13-0 at the Varsity Tennis Center this season, the 13th time that Michigan has won double-digit matches at home.
• U-M and Texas faced off earlier this season in consolation action at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship, with Michigan rallying for a 4-1 win after dropping the doubles point. The Wolverines got singles wins from Julia Fliegner, Piper Charney, Lily Jones and Reese Miller to record the victory. U-M is now 7-6 all-time against the Longhorns.
• This is the second time that Michigan and Texas are facing each other in the NCAA Tournament. U-M traveled to Austin for the first and second rounds in 2022, with Texas recording a 4-0 win in the second round. Fliegner is the only Wolverine to have played in that match, with Texas featuring two players who were in the lineup three years ago.
• The Wolverines have won 14 straight doubles points, last dropping the first point of the match at No. 24 UCLA (March 22). U-M has stayed pretty consistent with its lineup over that time, going with Jessica Bernales and Jones at No. 1, Miller and Fliegner at No. 2, and Charney and Emily Sartz-Lunde at No. 3.
• Charney is up to 34 singles wins on the season, tied for the eighth-most in a single season by a Wolverine. She has recorded back-to-back 30-win seasons to start her career, compiling 71 singles wins the last two seasons.
• Fliegner was named Michigan's female recipient of the Big Ten Medal of Honor, becoming just the third women's tennis player to earn the prestigious award in program history. She is up to 111 singles wins in her illustrious career, ranking sixth all-time.
• U-M has four ranked singles players in Fliegner (No. 6), Charney (No. 21), Jones (No. 46) and Sartz-Lunde (No. 68). Jones and Bernales come in at No. 18 as a doubles pair, with Bernales and Charney teaming up to be ranked No. 40. Miller and Fliegner are back in the latest rankings as a pair, ranking No. 45.
• Head coach Ronni Bernstein is in her 18th season as the head coach, holding a 548-196 overall coaching record. She is currently eighth nationally among active coaches in wins. Bernstein ranks 18th all-time in victories.
• The remainder of the NCAA Tournament is being hosted by Baylor in Waco, Texas. This is the first year that only the team championship will be contested in the spring, with the singles and doubles championships occurring this past fall.
