ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team won the doubles point and the first three singles matches off court to punch its ticket to the Sweet 16 behind a 4-0 win over Arizona State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon (May 3) at the Varsity Tennis Center. It marks the third straight season that Michigan has advanced out of the opening weekend of play.
Michigan stayed hot on the doubles court, winning the doubles point for the 14th straight match. U-M took simultaneous 2-0 leads at No. 1 and No. 2, eventually running its lead to 3-0 at No. 2.
At No. 3, the duo of Piper Charney and Emily Sartz-Lunde broke at 2-1 and consolidated the break in the ensuing game for a 3-1 lead. The pair never gave it back, winning 6-2 as the first match to finish.
Michigan was one game away from clinching the doubles point, up 5-2 at No. 1 and 5-4 at No. 2. It was the No. 2 pair of Reese Miller and Julia Fliegner that did the honors, winning 6-4 to give Michigan a 1-0 lead. Miller and Fliegner raced out to a 3-0 lead before ASU answered to get back on serve at 3-3. Following holds by each team, U-M broke the Sun Devils for a 5-4 lead. Fliegner served out the match in the ensuing game to put the first point on the board.
Michigan won five first sets in singles action, highlighted by Jessica Bernales rallying from down 5-1 for a 7-5 win. She fought off a pair of set points in the sixth game and proceeded to win the next six games for the win.
Miller pushed the Michigan lead to 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 5. Miller used fast starts in each set to account for Michigan's second point. In the second set, she held a 5-1 lead and had a chance to serve out the match. ASU answered with two straight games, but Miller made good on her second attempt to close out the match, winning the final set 6-3.
Fliegner quickly followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win at the top of the lineup over No. 69-ranked Sara Svetac to extend the Wolverine lead to 3-0. Fliegner broke for a 4-2 lead in the first set and won the final two games to take it. She followed the same script in the second, grabbing a 4-2 lead, but could not consolidate the break. The players exchanged breaks the rest of the final set, with Fliegner breaking Svetac in the final game in the straight-set win.
Charney and Bernales were each one game away from putting the fourth point on the board, but neither could hold their serve as ASU kept trying to extend the team match.
Lily Jones clinched the match for the Wolverines, picking up a 6-4, 7-5 at No. 3 for Michigan's fourth point of the afternoon. She broke Patricija Spaka in the final game of the first set, grabbing the 6-4 win. Jones was broken at 5-4 in the second set, but she responded by winning the final three games, sending Michigan to the round of 16.
U-M will host the third round of the NCAA Tournament next Saturday (May 10) against No. 14 Texas at 1 p.m. at the Varsity Tennis Center.
