» After an opening 79 in Friday's opening round, Hunter Thomson rallied with a second round 71 (-1) to vault himself 52 spots, tied for 89th (150, +7) after 36 holes of the NCAA Finals at the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa's North Course in Carlsbad, Calif.

CARLSBAD, Calif. -- With a second round 71 (-1) on Saturday (May 24), senior Hunter Thomson of the University of Michigan men's golf team vaulted himself 52 spots and is tied for 89th with a 150 (+7) 36-hole total at the NCAA Championships at the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa's North Course.
Starting off the 10th tee, Thomson opened with a birdie the par-5, 596-yard 10th hole to jump start his second round. He rolled through the back nine, rattling off eight straight pars before carding a second birdie on the par-5, 557-yard 18th hole.
Making the turn two-under, he three-putted the first hole to draw him even with eight holes remaining. With a third birdie on the North Course's four par 5s, Thomson was back in the red, but a bogey on the third drew him back to even. Rattling off five more pars, he reached his final hole of the round at even par. With a birdie on the par-4, 426-yard ninth hole, he etched a 71 (-1) -- his 24th sub-par tally of the season.
With one round left before the 54-hole cut, the top 15 teams and the top nine individuals among non-qualifying teams advance to Monday's (May 26) final round. Thomson will start the third round on Sunday (May 25) at 2:02 p.m. PT.
