WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team moved to 10-0 in the Big Ten, winning its 11th straight match in a 4-0 shutout of Purdue on Sunday afternoon (April 6) at the Schwartz Tennis Center.
U-M won the doubles point for the fifth straight match, getting wins at No. 1 and No. 3 to put the first point of the match on the board.
At No. 1, Jessica Bernales and Lily Jones won the final five games in a 6-2 win. Michigan broke to start but Purdue immediately returned the favor to keep the match on serve. After the teams exchanged holds for a 2-2 tie, Michigan did not drop another game in the 6-2 win.
Michigan's No. 3 pair of Emily Sartz-Lunde and Piper Charney clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory. U-M broke at 5-3 and closed out the match in the ensuing game on Charney's serve, ripping off four straight points after falling in a 0-30 hole.
Michigan won five first sets in singles action as Julia Fliegner and Bernales each used late breaks to pick up wins.
Charney pushed the Michigan lead to 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2. After dropping just two games in the opening set, Charney broke on the deuce point for a 5-3 lead. She closed it out on her racquet in the next game, losing just one point in the straight-set win.
It was a race to the finish line from there, as both Bernales and Reese Miller grabbed big leads in their second sets while holding match points at the same time.
Miller converted first, recovering from a 3-1 first-set hole to take a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 5. It was all Miller in the second set as she accounted for Michigan's third point of the match.
Bernales did the honor moments later, taking a 7-5, 6-0 win at No. 6. She won the final two games of the first set, breaking a 5-5 tie and avoiding a breaker to get the win. She cruised in the second set, converting on her third match point to give Michigan its second shutout win of the weekend.
Michigan returns to the Varsity Tennis Center for a pair next weekend, beginning with Oregon on Saturday (April 12) at noon.
