
Wolverines Keep Rolling, Shut Out Oregon

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 5-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team kept its winning streak intact, shutting out its third straight opponent in a 4-0 win over Oregon on Saturday afternoon (April 12) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The win marked Michigan's 12th straight victory, pushing U-M to 11-0 in Big Ten play.
U-M won the doubles point for the sixth straight match, winning at No. 1 and No. 2 to take the 1-0 lead. It was all Michigan at the top spot, with Jessica Bernales and Lily Jones blanking Oregon 6-0 to put Michigan on the brink.
U-M's No. 2 pair of Reese Miller and Julia Fliegner clinched the match's first point for the Maize and Blue behind a 6-2 win. Miller and Fliegner went down a break at 2-1 before reeling off five straight games to give Michigan the lead.
The Wolverines won all six first sets in singles action, dropping no more than two games at each spot in the lineup.
Jones accounted for Michigan's second point of the afternoon with a clinical 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3. After taking the first set, Jones won the first four games of the second and never looked back in the win.
Miller pushed the Michigan lead to 3-0 behind a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 5. Miller won the first 10 games before Oregon got on the board in the second set. After dropping the 11th game of the match, Miller won the ensuing two to wrap up the straight-set win.
It was a sprint to the finish as Piper Charney, Fliegner and Bernales were each one game away from putting the fourth point on the board.
Charney won the race, getting a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 2. On serve at 5-4 in the second, Charney won the final four points to break and secure the Michigan victory.
Michigan continues its homestand Sunday (April 13) at 11 a.m., hosting No. 17 Washington at the Varsity Tennis Center.
