ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 5-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team won its 13th consecutive match and clinched at least a share of the 2025 Big Ten championship with a 4-1 win over No. 17-ranked Washington on Sunday afternoon (April 13) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Michigan struck first, winning the doubles point for the seventh straight match behind wins at No. 3 and No. 2. The No. 3 duo of Emily Sartz-Lunde and Piper Charney were first off the court, winning 6-3. After three straight breaks of serve to start the match, Charney held serve for a 3-1 lead. U-M maintained the advantage and converted on the deuce point to close it out.
Moments later, the No. 2 pair of Reese Miller and Julia Fliegner clinched the match's first point with a 6-3 win. Michigan won five of the first six games to go up 5-1. Washington held off four match points and then held serve, but Fliegner closed it out on her serve for a 1-0 Michigan lead.
U-M won five first sets in singles play, including a rally from Charney to win 7-5 after trailing 4-1.
Lily Jones added Michigan's second point with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 3. She secured a late break at 5-4 in the first and cruised through the second for her third straight singles win.
Fliegner followed with a 6-0, 6-3 win at the top spot over No. 95 Reece Carter. After a dominant first set, Fliegner went up a break early in the second and never looked back, earning her third Big Ten singles victory of the season.
Washington got on the board with a win at No. 6, but Miller clinched the match less than a minute later with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 5. She jumped out to early leads in both sets and claimed her seventh straight singles win.
