COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team won the doubles point and three straight-set singles matches, running its winning streak to 14 in a 4-1 win at No. 9 Ohio State on Wednesday evening (April 16) at the Auer Tennis Complex.
Unlike the last time the teams played in Ann Arbor, a 4-3 Michigan win, the Wolverines struck first by taking the doubles point. It was all Michigan at the No. 3 position as Piper Charney and Emily Sartz-Lunde won the first two games. Ohio State got on the board in the third game, but the Wolverines ripped off four straight games after that to record a 6-1 win.
Ohio State evened the doubles ledger at one match each with a 6-3 win at No. 2. With the doubles point coming down to the match at the top of the lineup, the match was tied 4-4 at the completion of the match at No. 2.
Jessica Bernales and Lily Jones broke on the deuce point for a 5-4 lead, sending Jones back to serve for the match. Michigan fought off two break points in the final game, converting on the deuce point to pick up a 6-4 win over No. 15 Luciana Perry and Teah Chavez.
In singles action, Michigan took first sets at No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5.
Ohio State pulled level at 1-1 behind a straight-set win at No. 4. The tie was short-lived as Sartz-Lunde came through with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 5. After using a late break to take the first set, Sartz-Lunde grabbed a 3-1 lead and kept the break throughout the next four games. She went back to serve for the match at 5-3 but was broken. She immediately returned the favor, breaking Shelly Bereznyak in the final game to push Michigan ahead, 2-1.
Jones quickly followed with a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 3 for a 3-1 Michigan lead. She fell in a 3-1 hole in the first set before winning five of the next six games to get the win. Jones went up a break at 5-4 and had a chance to serve for the match but could not convert. Jones broke Sydni Ratliff again in the next game and made good on her second attempt to serve out the match when Ratliff sent a ball wide on match point.
Julia Fliegner and Charney were each one game away from putting the fourth point on the board following the win from Jones. Charney avenged a loss to No. 31 Teah Chavez earlier this season with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 2 to account for Michigan's fourth point. Charney raced out to a 3-0 lead in the first set, eventually taking the 6-4 win. In the second set, Charney was up 5-3 and serving for the match, but Chavez fought off a pair of match points. Much like Sartz-Lunde, Charney immediately answered back with a break to win the match when a Chavez forehand found the net.
U-M closes out the regular season on Saturday (April 19), hosting Michigan State at 1 p.m. at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines will honor Fliegner as part of Senior Day, presented by the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan prior to the match.
