ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team (20-3, 12-0 Big Ten) wraps up the regular season on Saturday (April 19), hosting Michigan State (13-10, 5-7 Big Ten) at the Varsity Tennis Center at 1 p.m. With a win, Michigan can clinch its third straight outright Big Ten championship. In addition, Julia Fliegner will be honored prior to the match as part of Senior Day presented by the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan.
Notes
• Michigan will conclude the regular season at home, hosting Michigan State at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines have won 24 straight against the Spartans and are 59-17 all-time against MSU. U-M is 10-0 at the Varsity Tennis Center this season.
• U-M has already clinched a share of the 2025 Big Ten championship and will look to win it outright with a victory over the Spartans. The title marks Michigan's third straight and 13th in program history, moving up to No. 2 in Big Ten history. It is title No. 12 for head coach Ronni Bernstein, ranking third all-time in Big Ten history.
• Michigan will honor Fliegner, its lone senior, prior to the match as part of Senior Day presented by the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan. Fliegner became just the second Wolverine in program history to make the semifinals of the NCAA Singles Championship, securing All-America honors this past fall. She is up to 107 singles wins in her career, ranking eighth all-time in program history.
• The Maize and Blue picked up its 20th victory in a 4-1 win at No. 9 Ohio State (April 16), wrapping up its fourth consecutive 20-win season.
• The Wolverines have won eight straight doubles points, last dropping the first point of the match at No. 24 UCLA (March 22). Last time out, in a non-conference match at Ohio State (April 16), Michigan picked up the doubles point after dropping it to the Buckeyes in March.
• Michigan enters the match on a 14-match winning streak after knocking off No. 9 Ohio State, 4-1, in a non-conference match in Columbus (April 16).
• U-M has won 40 straight Big Ten regular-season matches, dating back to the 2021-22 season. Michigan has only dropped 10 points across its 12 Big Ten matches this season. The Wolverines have 12 Big Ten wins this season, the second most in program history behind 15 during the 2021 season that only featured a Big Ten schedule.
• U-M has four ranked singles players in Fliegner (No. 3), Piper Charney (No. 34), Lily Jones (No. 40) and Emily Sartz-Lunde (No. 80). Jones and Jessica Bernales come in at No. 27 as a doubles pair, with Bernales and Charney teaming up to be ranked No. 29. Fliegner and Reese Miller are ranked No. 69 as a pair, giving Michigan three ranked doubles teams.
• As a team, Michigan is 75-21 in singles action during dual matches. Charney leads the way with 16 wins, with four other Wolverines in double figures. Charney picked up her 30th singles win of the season last time out, clinching the Michigan win at Ohio State. It is her second straight 30-win season after she won 37 matches as a freshman. There now have been seven Wolverines in program history with multiple 30-win seasons: Kate Fahey (3), Emina Bektas (3), Brienne Minor (3), Sarah Lee (3), Ronit Yurovsky (2), Denise Muresan (2) and Charney (2).
• Bernstein is in her 18th season as the head coach, holding a 543-195 overall coaching record. She is currently eighth nationally among active coaches in wins. Bernstein ranks 18th all-time in victories.
• U-M will head to Ojai, Calif., for the 2025 Big Ten Tournament as the No. 1 seed for the upcoming conference tournament.
