
Maize and Blue Dominate on Final Day of Conference Crossover

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan water polo team posted two wins on Saturday (April 6) at Canham Natatorium, closing out the Conference Crossover with a 17-11 victory over No. 20 Brown and a 22-9 decision over St. Francis.
Ari Karampetsou recorded seven goals and seven assists on the day, while Emma Gustafsson registered a hat trick against Brown (16-13, 7-5 CWPA) and added two goals and one assist against St. Francis (12-16, 2-10 CWPA). Junior Claire Eusey led all scorers in game two with five goals.
In the opener, Brown scored twice on penalty shots to begin the game. Michigan (17-9, 9-3 CWPA) answered with goals from Gustafsson and Jillian Schlom to even the score at 2-2. After a Brown goal, Matilda Waugh tied it again late in the first quarter, 3-3.
Michigan pulled ahead in the second quarter with goals from seniors Maiken Pardon, Kasey Umlauf and Ashley O'Neill. Gustafsson added another goal to give U-M a 7-4 lead at halftime.
The Wolverines extended their lead in the third, with Umlauf and Brooke Ingram scoring to start the period. Brown responded with two goals, but Karampetsou and Lulu Hirschfield added three more goals for U-M. Each team scored five goals in the quarter, with Michigan holding a 12-9 lead.
In the fourth, Ingram scored twice within the first minute, and Waugh added her second goal. Brown scored twice late, but Gustafsson completed her hat trick, and Jordan Schneider added a goal to close out the 17-11 win.
In the second game, Michigan scored five goals in the first quarter, with Karampetsou recording a hat trick in the first five minutes. O'Neill and Ingram added goals to make it 5-3 after one.
The Wolverines added six more goals in the second quarter, including two each from Karampetsou and Eusey. Riley Chapple and Sophia Panossian also scored. The U-M defense held St. Francis to one goal in the quarter, taking an 11-4 lead into halftime.
Michigan scored nine goals in the third to put the game out of reach. Abby Schulz, Chapple, Kaia Levenfeld, Gustafsson, and Eusey contributed goals during the frame. Karampetsou scored her sixth, and Schlom added another to make it 20-8 through three quarters.
In the final quarter, Gustafsson and Eusey each scored again. St. Francis added a goal in the final seconds, as Michigan closed out the 22-9 win.
The Wolverines return to action on Saturday, April 19, when they travel to Bloomington, Ind., to face Indiana at 11 a.m. at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.
