
Michigan Tops Northwestern on Senior Day

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 23-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team sent out its senior class with a win, defeating Northwestern 4-0 on Sunday (April 6) at the Varsity Tennis Center to complete a weekend sweep. Michigan also earned a victory over Illinois on Friday.
The Wolverines claimed the doubles point for the fifth straight match, with Will Cooksey, Bjorn Swenson and Mert Oral securing singles victories to seal the team win.
Swenson and Oral opened doubles play with a 6-2 win at No. 3, using a pair of breaks to improve to 5-4 in dual play and 2-0 in Big Ten matches. Cooksey and Alex Cairo followed at No. 2 with a 6-4 win, pushing their conference record to 4-0.
In singles, Swenson earned his sixth straight win with a 6-2, 7-6 (2) decision over Greyson Casey at No. 3. After trading early games, Swenson took the final three of the first set. He then won five straight points in the second-set tiebreaker to finish the match in straight sets.
At No. 1, Cooksey defeated Saiprakash Goli 6-3, 6-3 for his fourth consecutive win and 20th of the season. Oral clinched the match at No. 6, rebounding from a 4-1 deficit to win five straight games and take the first set. He held the lead throughout the second for his second clinching win of the year.
Michigan's senior class, recognized prior to the match, has posted a 49-5 home record during its four-year careers, along with an 83-30 overall mark and a 32-5 Big Ten record.
Next weekend, the Wolverines will travel west to face two new Big Ten opponents. They will take on UCLA on Friday (April 11) at 2 p.m. PT, followed by a Sunday (April 13) match against USC at noon PT.
