BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team ran its winning streak to 10, shutting out Indiana, 4-0, behind the doubles point and three straight-set singles wins on Saturday afternoon (April 5) at the IU Tennis Center.
Michigan wasted little time in doubles, winning matches at No. 2 and No. 3 to take the first point of the match in just 30 minutes.
Piper Charney and Emily Sartz-Lunde dropped just one game at No. 2, winning a 6-1 match to put the Wolverines on the brink of the doubles point. The Wolverine pair won the first four games en route to the win.
Michigan's No. 3 pair of Ava Bruno and Lily Jones clinched the point with a 6-2 win. Bruno and Jones won the first three games and four of the first five to take control of the match, eventually staking the Wolverines a 1-0 lead.
U-M won all six first sets in singles action to keep the Hoosiers at bay.
Michigan picked up three straight-set singles wins in a span of 15 minutes, keeping Indiana off the board in the victory.
Jones started the Wolverine streak, winning 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3 for Michigan's second point. Jones jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first set and kept the break throughout the 6-3 win. It was all Jones in the second as she did not drop a game to account for Michigan's second point of the afternoon.
Sartz-Lunde followed a few minutes later, dropping just three games in a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4 to move to 7-0 in Big Ten matches.
It was a race to the finish from there as Reese Miller and Charney were each a game away from winning their respective matches. Miller put the final point on the scoreboard for the Maize and Blue, winning 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5 while Charney held a match point at No. 2.
Miller won the final three games of her first set, taking advantage of the break midway through. In the second, Miller again got the break she needed and did not give it back in her 19th singles win of the season.
Michigan wraps up a two-match swing in Indiana tomorrow (Sunday, April 6), facing Purdue in West Lafayette at noon.
