GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team closed out the Tom Jones Invitational on Saturday (April 19), setting a program record and two top-10 program marks at Percy Beard Track.
The 4x400-meter relay team of Payton Smith, Savannah Sutherland, Sidney Green and Noelani Phillips set a program record with a time of 3:30.17, besting the previous record by 0.33 seconds.
Iliana Downing set a top-10 program mark for the second straight meet, clearing a personal best 4.20 meters (13 feet, 9.25 inches) in the pole vault to finish third and move up to No. 4 on the program performers list. Downing's mark is the best by a freshman in program history.
Abigail Russell finished third with a personal-best 16.32m (53-6.5) in the shot put, the No. 5 mark on the program performers list. Trinity Franklin finished 10th with a season-best 15.12m (49-7.25).
In the 100-meter dash, BreeAna Bates finished ninth (11.75 seconds) and came just 0.21 seconds from a personal best.
Smith finished 29th in the 400-meter dash invite section with a time of 53.96, 0.81 seconds shy of her personal best. In the 400-meter open section, Phillips placed 10th (54.36) and Trinity Henderson placed 23rd (55.67).
U-M will head to the City of Brotherly Love for the Penn Relays at Franklin Field from Thursday through Saturday (April 24-26).
