Michigan Shuts Out Nebraska to Start B1G Action

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team won the doubles point and the first three singles matches off the court, opening Big Ten play with a 4-0 shutout at Nebraska on Friday evening (March 7) at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center.
Michigan struck first, taking the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. U-M's top pair of Jessica Bernales and Piper Charney, ranked No. 27, was first off the court with a 6-3 win.
Michigan's No. 2 duo of Julia Fliegner and Reese Miller broke in the final game, wrapping up a 6-4 win at No. 2 moments later to clinch the first point of the match.
U-M took five first sets in singles action against the Huskers.
Bernales, playing at No. 4 for the first time this season, pushed the Michigan lead to 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 win to improve to 6-2 in dual-match play.
Making her 2025 dual-match debut, Bayley Sheinin collected her first victory with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 6.
Fliegner put the finishing touches on the Michigan victory, winning the final four games of her second set at No. 1. After taking the first set 6-3, she fell behind 5-3 in the second. Fliegner, the No. 2-ranked singles player in the country, then responded by winning four straight games, clinching the Michigan victory and keeping the Huskers off the board.
Michigan wraps up its road weekend on Sunday (March 9), heading to Iowa City to face the Hawkeyes at 10 a.m. CDT.
