Third-Quarter Run Propels Michigan Past Washington in B1G Tourney

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team used a 16-2 run to end the third quarter, holding Washington scoreless for 5:24 of gameplay, en route to a 66-58 win over Washington in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday afternoon (March 6) at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
Michigan had three players in double figures, led by Olivia Olson's 21 points and six rebounds in 34 minutes. Syla Swords turned in 15 points, four rebounds and three assists, with Jordan Hobbs going for 11 points, six rebounds and four assists. Yulia Grabovskaia and Brooke Quarles Daniels were instrumental off the bench, with Grabovskaia recording three points and three boards and Quarles Daniels going for six points, five rebounds and three steals.
After Washington got on the board first, Michigan uncorked a 10-0 run that included triples from Greta Kampschroeder and Hobbs for a 10-4 lead in the early going. The Huskies chipped away at the lead, with Michigan eventually leading 14-13 after 10 minutes.
U-M struggled to score in the early going of the second quarter as Washington scored the first six points for a 19-14 lead. A pair of Kampschroder free throws with 4:59 remaining put Michigan on the board in the second quarter, with Mila Holloway converting a three-point play on Michigan's next possession to pull the teams level.
Back-to-back buckets from Hobbs sandwiched around a Washington three-pointer in the final 1:30 of the second quarter sent Michigan to the break with a 29-28 lead.
The teams went back-and-forth over the opening minutes of the third quarter, with Washington taking its final lead of the game at 39-36 with 6:37 remaining in the period.
Olson kickstarted the aforementioned run, converting a layup from Grabovskaia. Swords cashed in on a baseline jumper, with Olson and Quarles Daniels following with layups as Washington called timeout at the 4:42 mark with the U-M lead at 44-39.
Olson scored five straight out of the timeout to push the lead to double figures before Washington momentarily stopped the run with a jumper with 37 seconds left. Swords hit a triple right before the buzzer, giving U-M a 52-41 lead after 30 minutes.
The Michigan lead stayed in double figures until Washington converted a three-point play with 4:55 to go, trimming the U-M advantage to 59-51. Olson and Hobbs converted back-to-back bucket for the Wolverines, essentially putting the game out of reach.
U-M will face No. 4 seed and No. 15-ranked Maryland in tomorrow's quarterfinals (Friday, March 7) at approximately 2:20 p.m.
