Trio of 20-Point Scorers Lead Way in Knocking Off No. 15 Maryland in B1G Tourney Quarters

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team raced out to a 25-point lead in the first half and withstood a first-half Maryland rally to record a 98-71 victory over the No. 15-ranked Terrapins on Friday afternoon (March 7) at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. With the win, Michigan advances to the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament for the second straight year.
Michigan had a trio of double-figure scorers, led by a 23-point performance from Jordan Hobbs. The senior also recorded four rebounds, three assists and four steals in 28 minutes. Syla Swords turned in 22 points, four rebounds, six assists and two steals, with Olivia Olson turning in 20 points, three rebounds and five assists. U-M tallied 28 assists on 36 made field goals, shooting 61.0 percent from the field. Michigan's 98 points marked the most the Wolverines have ever scored in a Big Ten Tournament game.
Michigan (22-9) held Maryland (23-7) scoreless for the last 6:20 of the first quarter, taking a 27-6 lead after 10 minutes of action. Olson had 10 first-quarter points as Michigan went 11-for-16 from the field and 5-for-8 from three-point range in the first 10 minutes.
Michigan led by as many as 25 points in the first half, taking a 31-6 lead in the opening minute of the second period. Maryland flipped the script the rest of the way in the first half, outscoring Michigan 31-14 over the second 10 minutes. The Terps never took the lead in the stanza despite closing the U-M advantage to one. Hobbs hit a left-point triple as time expired to send Michigan to the break with a 41-37 lead.
The Wolverines took control in the third quarter and did not allow a second Maryland push in the second half. Michigan outscored the Terps 28-12 in the third behind 15 points from Hobbs. Maryland trimmed the Michigan lead to three points, 47-44, just over two minutes into the quarter. Hobbs hit a free throw on Michigan's next possession, jump-starting a 12-3 Wolverines run. The run ended with three straight three-pointers, coming in succession from Olson, Hobbs and Swords to force a Maryland timeout with 4:21 left and the U-M lead back to 59-47.
The run continued out of the break with U-M scoring the next eight points behind a layup from Brooke Quarles Daniels, a bucket from Yulia Grabovskaia and four free throws from Hobbs for a 67-47 lead with 36 seconds left in the third.
Michigan led by as many as 30 points in the fourth quarter, with all 12 Wolverines seeing the court. U-M got 19 points off its bench and outscored Maryland 18-2 in fast-break points.
U-M will face No. 1 seed and No. 2-ranked USC in the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament on Saturday (March 8) at 3 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
