ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Despite 20 points each from Vladislav Goldin and Danny Wolf and a late second-half rally, the No. 17-ranked University of Michigan men's basketball team fell 71-65 to 13th-ranked Maryland on Wednesday (March 5) in the Wolverines' home finale at Crisler Center.
Leaders and Best
After scoring six points in the first half, Goldin scored 14 in the second half to finish with 20 points -- his fifth 20-plus point game in his last six. Adding a career-high 15 rebounds, he posted his fifth double-double of the season and third in his last six games.
Wolf, who scored 11 of U-M's 22 first-half points, was 9-for-12 from the field and finished with 20 points -- his sixth 20-plus point game. He added seven rebounds and four assists. Tre Donaldson posted his 12th game with five assists or more, closing with six, and added 10 points.
Second Half
Maryland's inside-out attack continued to slow the Wolverines (22-8, 14-5 Big Ten). After six points in the first half, Goldin scored 10 of U-M's first 17 second-half points to cut U-M deficit in half, 44-39, forcing Maryland to call a timeout with 13 minutes remaining. With an energized crowd, Maryland's Ja'Kobi Gillespie and Rodney Rice hit back-to-back three-pointers out of the timeout to quiet the Crisler fans and put the Terrapins back up 11. However, U-M went on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to four, 50-46, as dunks by Nimari Burnett and Wolf sandwiched around a three-pointer by Donaldson sparked the run.
As the Wolverines drew within two points twice in the second half, the Terrapins (23-7, 13-6 Big Ten) continued to counter any U-M attack, maintaining at least a four-point lead with four minutes left. Making its free throws, Maryland extended its lead to eight with two minutes left before a Burnett triple brought the Wolverines within five. Despite some late Wolverine three-pointers, Maryland secured its fifth road win.
First Half
U-M's home finale got off to a sluggish start as both squads combined to shoot 3-for-13 from the field with Maryland (1-for-6) holding a slight 5-4 edge after a Rice three-pointer. The game continued slowly before U-M went on an 8-0 run thanks to Wolf's layup and three-pointer, followed by a Nimari Burnett triple as Maryland was forced to call a timeout, with the Wolverines up 12-7.
Out of the timeout, the Terrapins responded with a 9-2 run to reclaim the lead, 16-14. Wolf did his best to keep the Wolverines in the game, but Maryland scored 11 points off U-M turnovers, capitalized on six offensive boards, and closed on a 15-4 run to take an 11-point lead into halftime, 33-22.
